Mixed Vegetable for Lent

April 8, 2012 in food and beverage, photography, recipe

mixed vegetables for easter

Lent is the season that Catholic is encouraged not to abstain from eating meat.  If we are talking about Lent, it mean’s no meat.  It has been a tradition for so many centuries.

Why do we need to abstain from meat during Lent?

“From the first century, the day of the crucifixion has been traditionally observed as a day of abstaining from flesh meat (‘black fast’) to honor Christ who sacrificed his flesh on a Friday,” according to “The Catholic Source Book.”

Abstinence is a way of penance does the practice of not eating meat during this period is one of the things we as a Catholic must do.  So, this is the time to eat healthy food, vegetable for example.

Mixed vegetables is one of the best recipe  for Lenten season.  It composed of vegetable ingredients that are not just healthy for our body but oh so satisfying too.  It’s easy to make too;

Ingredients:

Cream of Mushroom

Carrots

Turnip (singkamas)

Green peas

Potato

red and green pepper

quail eggs

raisins

Salt and pepper to taste

Preparations:

Prepare the ingredients, saute together in low fire with the cream of mushroom.

Eggs are prepared separately (boiled in water and some salt to taste)

Put eggs and raisins for design.

A little tip, goes for the fresh one but if you need to buy directly from the mall, choose the frozen one instead of the can.  Why?  Because it tastes better because they haven’t been soaked for months unlike the canned one.

It is always our desires to live a healthy life and a journey to achieving it is somehow seems hard if you have something like this in front of you.  I so love shawarma and i still remember my longings to eat one when i came here in Naga City.

I remember my high school days in St. Scho where me and my friends would hang out at FB Harrizon plaza to just eat shawarma and drink sago’t gulaman.  I t’s the best shawarma for me and I so missed that place , that is why when i had a chance to visit it, i usually make it to the point to include it on my itinerary.

Making your own shawarma is very easy and the ingredients are basic.  You can see all of them in the pictures.  Try one now and indulge if you must!

A Cheeky Weekend of Chocolate

February 28, 2012 in food and beverage, Hotels & Restaurant

The city of York is well known for its long association with confectionery and the sweet smell of chocolate still lingers over it to this day. Most of York’s population have family associations with chocolate and sweet manufacturers such as Terry’s, Rowntree and Nestle. To celebrate this wonderful heritage, York will be holding its first chocolate festival between Friday 6th April and Monday 12th April 2012.

The festival is the ideal opportunity for chocoholics and families alike to enjoy a long weekend staying in York hotels and making the most of the activities that will be on offer. Events will take place at retailers, restaurants and other venues throughout the city.

A New Museum
The chocolate festival coincides with the opening of The Sweet History of York, a museum dedicated to the city’s links with the confectionery industry over the ages. Its aim is to celebrate the household names such as Smarties, Kit Kats and Aeros that originated in the city, as well as showcase the local artisan chocolates that can be found in the cafes, shops and York hotels.

Chocolate Market
A specialist chocolate market, located in Parliament Street, will celebrate the unique talents of Yorkshire chocolatiers and offer many different chocolate creations from the well-known to the more obscure. There will also be a number of chocolate tastings, workshops, demonstrations and Easter-Egg hunts, all of which are ideal for families.

Other Attractions
If a weekend spent embracing the world of chocolate is not enough, then why not take the opportunity to spend some time exploring some of York’s many interesting sights and attractions? The city’s heritage encompasses a Roman, Viking and medieval past and there are many fascinating reminders from these times. The famous York Minster includes Norman and Roman relics and is one of the biggest Gothic cathedrals in Europe. The Jorvik Viking Centre offers an unrivalled glimpse of what it was like to live in a Viking city.

The York Dungeons offer visitors the chance to get a glimpse of the city’s more horrible past, although visiting is not recommended for those of a nervous disposition. With interactive shows, live actors, special effects and ghostly apparitions, the Dungeons are a great family day out.

For something less gory, why not enjoy a York city cruise? 45-minute circular cruises of the city are a great way to see the sights, learn some fascinating facts about the city and relax while why you digest all the chocolate you have consumed.

If you have not overindulged at one of the chocolate demonstrations, then why not make the most of the gastronomic delights on offer? York is the centre of one of the most important food-producing areas in England and is home to a wide range of eateries that make use of and celebrate local produce. From tea rooms to stylish restaurants, there is a plenty of choice to suit every taste.

The York Chocolate Festival is a great time to visit the city. As well as enjoying the indulgence that goes hand in hand with the chocolate-themed events that are taking place, the city and its many fascinating attractions have something to offer singles, couples and families alike.

Pasta Laing with Spicy Purefoods Corned Beef

February 24, 2012 in Food & Travel Blogs, food and beverage, recipe

Laing is always favored by many Bicolanos. Majority of the people knows how to cook them and restaurants and small eatery had their own version of laing.

Although it was very easy to make, right procedure is needed so that you will achieve the saucy texture without the itchiness in your taste bud.
Being raised in Manila, I am not fond of dishes that are cooked in coconut milk (guinataan), I prefer dried dishes or with soup but when I married a Bicolano, the first thing I needed to learn (of course beside learning the dialect ) is their favorite spicy guinataan dishes, spicy is out of the question because my father is half Bicolano and we both love spicy foods but dishes cooked in coconut milk is one thing I have to learn.

So, I have to ask new found friends and relatives on the right procedure and to let them share with me their well kept techniques and secret. Everybody had something to share and of course at first, you will never get it right even if you have followed the basic procedure but as time and years goes by, you will surely know it from the heart.

Now, I am sharing with you another version of Laing topped on Pasta. Maybe you have already heard about it including, Laing Ice Cream, Pizza Laing. This is something your family, friends and visitors will love. I bet, you will be the subject of talk on tomorrow’s topic and your friend will surely all be dying to ask for the recipe.

laing ingredients

Laing ingredients

Ingredients:

½  Kilo Fetuccine  pasta

1 plastic Dried Gabi leaves

1 can Original Purefoods Corned Beef. Chili Garlic

4 cups of coconut milk (1st and 2nd wash)

2 tablespoon of oil

1 small ginger ( chopped and minced)

1 small garlic (minced)

1 small onion (chopped)

7 pcs hot pepper (siling haba) red and green

Water

Black Pepper and salt to taste

 Procedure/Preparation:

Pasta:

In a large pot, bring 4 liters water to boil, put 2 tablespoon of oil and sprinkle some salt.  Salt is used to season your pasta, so it will not taste flat.

When the water is boiling,(make sure it is boiling first) put your pasta and cooked for until it was tender of slightly firm on your bite or as they called  al dente.

Drain the pasta and set aside.

Laing Toppings

laing

In a large pan, pour 2nd washed coconut milk, add garlic and onion, ginger and sili, bring them to boil.  Stir occasionally so that the coconut milk will not (magbuo-buo).

Add the Purefoods Corned Beef, continue stirring.

Add your Dried gabi leaves and make sure that you cooked them in a low fire.

Pour gradually some coconut milk (first wash).  Put the sili and stir a little bit until a saucy texture is achieved. Make sure not to stir hard because your laing might become over cooked and become itchy on your tongue.

On a plate, placed some pasta and pour Laing on top. See my Adorable Peachy with this dish.
